“The EDF Energy Ice Rink at The Forum is a huge
success and a great achievement. It gives Norwich a
stunning seasonal centrepiece and the people of Norfolk
an exhilarating Christmas activity. We are confident
that we will exceed our target of 20,000 skaters over
the seven week opening period, but this could not have
been achieved without the support of a whole range of
sponsors and supporters or the professionalism and expertise
of Base Line.”

“We had an ice-rink for the first time in 2004
and were delighted with the success of the event. The
Central Courtyard of Warwick Castle isn't the easiest
site on which to build an ice rink particularly with
access restrictions, however Base Line worked within
these limitations and delivered a great ice rink which
proved hugely popular.”
Alison Hartin, Marketing
Manager,
Warwick Castle

The EDF Energy Ice Rink at
The Forum, Norwich demonstrates the process involved
in delivering a top quality attraction in a city centre
and highlights the range of equipment and services provided
and managed by Base Line.
Scaffolding was installed to form
a platform for an attractive group of marquees. The
marquees were fitted out to provide an easy-to-manage
entrance and exit to the rink with enclosed skate hire,
changing, cloakroom and first aid facilities (all custom-built
for this installation).
Safety fencing was erected around
the site and 50 tons of sand used to level the area
for the ice rink (there are several other options for
the flooring).
Barriers were assembled to mark
the boundary of the ice rink and mats of porta pipes
laid out.
Each row of mats was rolled out
on a giant reel to cover the whole area. Sand was then
put between the pipes to help speed up the freezing
process.
All the mats of pipes were connected
up to a giant chiller unit and water sprayed onto the
sand and pipes. The chiller then pumped a mixture of
water and glycol through the pipe network to freeze
the damp sand.
Once the sand was frozen the ice
making process began. Water was pumped onto the area
and left to freeze, then another layer pumped on and
frozen. Base Line followed a strict schedule for the
installation, working through the night to ensure delivery
on time.
Around the ice attractive crowd
control barriers were erected and the safety fencing
removed. Sound and lighting was installed and Christmas
trees, lights and other decorative features completed.
